With weeks packed with school assignments, college research, and after school activities, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Being a high school student isn’t easy. Often it’s a lot of work and a lot of newfound responsibility. However, we’re still teenagers and occasionally, we need to take a break from all of the stress and let loose. It can be something as small as going for a run or something as exciting as a huge concert, but whatever it may be, we need to make time to have fun too. Find what makes you happy and make sure you give yourself a break every once in a while. If you need some ideas, here are a few to get you started:

1. Go For a Run

Before you think I’m insane, give me a second to explain. Taking a quick study break to go for a run (or a walk…or any kind of exercise really) can be extremely liberating. The endorphins your body releases when you run wake you up and make you feel more relaxed and happy. It doesn’t have to be a full out run either. It can be a slow jog or even walking. Just getting outside and getting moving can do wonders. It’s a great outlet for relieving stress and can help you get in shape. If you make it a regular thing, you’d be surprised how much better you’ll feel on a day-to-day basis.

2. Relax with Friends

One of the simplest ways to relax is to spend time with your friends. When everyone is so busy, it can be hard to find time to just hang out, but spending time together can help relieve a huge amount of stress. Talking about and finding solutions to your problems is part of the reason that friends exist. They’re your friends because they care about you and want you to be happy. Find some time, whether it be getting to school fifteen minutes early or staying fifteen minutes late, to just be with your friends and relax. If anyone can get your mind off of your busy schedule, it’s your best friends.

3. Spend the Night Out

A great way to take a break from your busy week is to go somewhere completely different. If you live near a city, go downtown and have a nice dinner with your friends or wander around the park. If you don’t live near a city, go to the movies or go to a sports game. Go out and do something you wouldn’t get to do every day. A change of scenery might be exactly what you need.

4. Go to a Concert

One of my absolute favorite ways to let loose is to go to a concert. It could be anything from a huge music festival like Lalapalooza or a small Indie band in a run down venue. Either way, seeing one of your favorite bands in person is a monumental experience. Hearing them play your favorite songs live and being surrounded by people who appreciate them the same way you do is absolutely worth the long lines and cramped spaces. Take your friends, meet some new people, and sing at the top of your lungs! It will be a night you’ll remember forever.

5. Find a Good Book

Something as simple as a good book can easily give your mind a break. With our increasingly busy schedules, it’s difficult to find time for pleasure reading. Set aside a block of time and pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read. Immerse yourself in a futuristic world or a dystopian society or even ancient adventures. Whatever genre you’re in to, take a break from reality and jump into a good book.

6. Party!

High school is a time most of us will only experience once in our lives. Why leave without attending one of the famous high school parties? Dancing to blaring music with your friends will certainly help you let loose. Break out your unique dance moves or build up the courage to talk to your long time crush. Just have fun! Parties are all about letting loose and forgetting about a grueling school week. Just don’t forget to be responsible!

As we pack our schedules with assignments, sports, and  school, it can be hard to relax. However, we shouldn’t work so hard that we forget to enjoy our high school years. Make time to relax every so often, whether it be something small or a huge event. We’re still teenagers and we deserve a break every once in a while.
