My name is Christine and I’m starting a health marathon that I’ll be documenting here on The Prospect. I say marathon because since I’m trying to lose a whopping 130 pounds in 2 years, and it’s not going to be a sprint. That’s where the name of the series came from, too: Running uphill is not easy, and I may trip or have to sit down or even go downhill some, but it is completely possible. I am going to be really open with you guys, because health is really important and I want to demonstrate that we can all get healthy no matter where we start. I also want this to be a really open place for you guys to talk to me and me to talk back. We are not alone in this journey, so we should never feel like we are.
An Introduction: Who is Christine?
I am an 18 year-old girl, who is going to school at The College of William and Mary. My plan is to major in biology and minor in French. Some random facts about me:
- I love typewriters and turtles.
- Shopping is one of my favorite things to do, but I have to cut down due to college.
- I played the bassoon for 6 years.
- Dresses are my favorite thing to wear because they are a one piece outfit (super fast too).
- I love using Tumblr and Facebook.
- My dream job is working with Doctors without Borders in Francophone Africa.
The Nitty Gritty Health Stuff
Let it be known that this is my second real and determined attempt at getting healthy; last year I wore my shoes for long distance running but didn’t attack it right so I tripped and tumbled right down the hill. I’ve started seeing my primary care physician regularly (every 2 or 3 months) and she backs me completely on this journey to lose weight (she’s also going to be a source of some information in future articles).
I’m trying to lose weight because my mother had a heart attack when I was in the 5th grade (don’t worry she’s fine now), and I don’t want to put myself at risk for that any longer. Diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure all run in my family and I want to live a healthy lifestyle without any of those risks. I also want to get healthy to help the way I view myself (I’m going to be doing a post later on about how to feel body positive when you’re surrounded by knockouts).
I plan on cycling, going to the recreation center and trying to find some other college friendly ways to get active, eat well and get fit. I’ll update you on my stats in every post. I not only plan on talking to you guys about myself, but I plan on passing along some really valuable information to help you get started on health journey and hopefully keep off the weight. Just to get you interested: In the near future, I’ll be writing about BMI, BMR/RMR, ketones, goal setting and tons of other really snazzy stuff (some of it involves shopping!), so I hope you guys are ready to come along for the ride.
MY STATS (*inhales deeply*):
Goal Weight: 160 pounds
Starting weight in July 2013: (drum roll) 297lbs
Weight at the start of Running Uphill: 288.8lbs
Weight change: -8.2lbs
BMI (I’m going to talk more about this later in the series): 45.6
Pants size: 20-24 (depends)
Blood Pressure (August 14th): 117/72
Weight related health Problems: High cholesterol, joint pain, back pain (partially due to my flat feet)
I promise all my posts won’t be THIS long!
