Feeling alone as you swim through the terrifying waters known as the college admission process? Have no fear! We have several seniors blogging about ups, downs, and random in-betweens of their college process for the next 12 months (from June 2015 to June 2016!). Sit back, relax, and get that “OMG I totally get you, bro” feeling. Information for how to contact a blogger will be at the bottom of his/her posts.
You’re were just momentarily confused. You don’t remember it because your brain already shoved it in the back of your mind. When were you confused? When you read the name of the writer, that’s when. Now you remember. Yeah, I know it’s hard and weird. That mess of eleven letters I call my first name has yet to lose in a match against pronunciation. Every single first day of school, in every single class I know exactly when my name is going to be called because there comes an ominous pause. And then a stumble. And then a mutter. And then a desperate look around the room. And that’s my cue to go: ‘Looghermine, here!’ But there is more to me than my name.
To honor the crazy and totally original name I was given, I’m going to try and describe myself using other names ascribed to me.
Floridian: I live in a suburb in South Florida that’s 30 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale, 30 minutes from Miami, and 15 minutes from the beach. Like everyone else says, I live where you vacation. I complain about living down here a lot, but it comes with plenty of perks. Like Disney. And the beach. And Downtown Miami. And Disney. And plenty of sunshine. And days off because of minor hurricanes. And Disney…you get the point.
Fangirl: I can get REALLY attached onto TV shows, books, movies you name it. Current favorites: Daredevil (read: ANYTHING MARVEL), Orphan Black, Bones, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Inception, Interstellar, and Agatha Christie or Jules Verne novels. Oh and game shows. From Jeopardy and The Price is Right to The Amazing Race and Big Brother. I love ‘em all.
Student: I attend a charter high school that runs K-12. So it’s possible that you could be in the same school with the same people from your first day of school to graduation. And plenty of kids have done it. I consider myself a pretty good student all around (even though I’m a huge procrastinator), but my favorite subjects are English and History/Social Studies.
Leader: I’m super involved with my school’s Newspaper and Model UN club. I’m also a class officer (and I’m a little too excited about planning our prom). I like to take on leadership roles so that I can be a voice for the silenced, whether it be for students complaining about class shirts or for Libyan migrants to Europe.
Activist: I’m a huge human rights activist and a feminist. I’m pretty sure I was born with the UN Charter in my hands. Growing up with a breadwinner mother and in such a diverse community has made me realize that all people are people and deserve to be treated as such. I want to be a part of the leaders that make sure that everyone gets what they deserve to live a life on this planet where they are respected and happy.
Dreamer: I’ve always dreamed of travelling all around the world and seeing the sights and meeting the people and eating the food, but since I’m ballin’ on a budget, I stick to sighing over National Geographic and Travel Channel’s photos on Instagram. But one day I’ll circumnavigate the globe. I’m also really into space (shoutout to Scott Kelly spending a year on the International Space Station). I’d love to travel there too.
So maybe my name isn’t all bad. It takes some time for it so sit right on people’s tongues, but they get there eventually. I mean if such a crazy name can be attributed with so many other good ones, it’s got to be a blessing of some sorts, right?
