As the semester starts and winter break ends the days that may have been spent lounging around on Netflix in between intermittent naps are now coming to an end. Now instead of Netflix and chilling (by yourself or with another) you need to learn how to Netflix and go to the Library.
Managing your time between what you want to do and what you have to do is a difficult thing to do. It is important to find what you enjoy but studying is an equally important part of college. When the semester starts we often find ourselves being bombarded with assignments but the mentality from break may carry over. By making sure to schedule in library time daily it will help you maintain your grades.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll still get distracted even if you’re in the library which means it is important to know yourself. One of the best methods to do this is put yourself in the library without any friends and see what you reach for first. Do you reach for your phone? Do you browse your social media accounts on your computer? Do you go on video watching sites such as Netflix, Hulu, or Crunchyroll? By determining what your main distractions are you’ll know how to resist them in the future.
There are a lot of apps to help prevent yourself from going on your favorite apps. One such app that I love is StayFocusd it is an app for chrome and it will prevent you from going on the sites no matter what while you try to do to stop the app. Another method is breaking your studying into intervals. Such as studying for 40 minutes and then watching 20 minutes of a show or taking that time to refresh yourself by checking your phone. If you place your phone in night mode so that it doesn’t vibrate and place it away/ hide it in your backpack you’ll have to actively check it. So instead of it just being a simple grab of the phone you’ll have to really think about how you are reaching into your backpack and finding your phone. If this makes you less likely to reach for It than it is good.
Once your studying is done for the day one way to reward yourself is by scheduling time in later to go on your favorite websites and to hang out with friends. This way you won’t feel like you’re restricting yourself as much but rather have a time to enjoy yourself. This will prevent binging in the long run because you won’t feel as deprived. Too much of anything is never good which is why instead of saying cut all of it out I’m prescribing a daily or weekly dose of something that you enjoy. If you find yourself not sticking to your schedule you should consider getting / actually using your planner and decorating it before you use it. Each week update it it with colorful words of encouragement and other decorations. You can also take this time to schedule in things you enjoy as well as assignments you know are coming up. By making sure you repeat these motions it will make it easier to accomplish it all in the future.
All in all it is important to find the right balance of Netflix and the Library. By staying on top of your game when you graduate you’ll be able to afford a Netflix subscription all by yourself. While you may already do this for some this will be a big accomplishment. By thinking about the future it makes it easier to commit yourself to studying a little bit longer and checking Facebook less.
