It’s finally here… SUMMER! Ahead of us are days of chilling by the pool and sleeping in until two in the afternoon. Although those two options sound ideal we do have to find other forms of entertainment, and what greater form of entertainment is there than the movies? Although there are many exciting films coming out in the next few months, I’ve come up with a list of the top five must see films for the summer of 2014!
5. Transformers: Age of Extinction
To start off the countdown is the fourth installment of the Transformers franchise, Transformers: Age of Extinction. From the trailer it seems that the movie will be quite different from the other three movies, one of the major differences being the absence of Shia Labeouf. Although we will all be sure to miss Shia, the movie does include some of our favorite autobots including Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, and also the addition of new cast members such as Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz. The trailer shows that the movie will be filled with countless battle scenes with transformer robots and spaceships attacking earth. Not to mention the killer transformer dinosaurs that pop up. This movie seems to be very promising and action packed so be sure to catch it in theaters when it is released on June 27 (USA)
This movie shows the story from the point of view of the evil queen from the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. It is extremely rare that movies show the antagonist’s point of view but Maleficent does just that. Not only does it show us the overall story of Sleeping Beauty but it shows us Maleficent’s reasoning behind her actions, making the viewer empathize with apparent villian. Judging from the trailer, the special effects seem mesmerizing and terrifying but still family friendly. So whether you just love Disney movies or you have younger siblings, Maleficent is sure to be a great watch.
3. X-Men Days of Future Past
Sentinels and assassinations and mutants, oh my! The newest X-men movie released on May 23 sure lived up to all its hype. I can attest to this, having seen it in theatres last week. I was entertained for all 131 minutes of it. The movie features all of our beloved X-men characters, including Wolverine, Iceman, Magneto, Professor X and many more. The movie is set in the future where Sentinels are killing off mutants, to the point where they face extinction. To counter this Wolverine is sent back into the past to help certain events from taking place so that the Sentinels are never created. BUT what kind of a movie would it be if everything went as if it was supposed to? As usual, there are the unfortunate events and unexpected actions by characters that leave the audience on the edge of their seats. So if you’re looking for an exciting movie filled with awesome graphics make sure to catch X-Men Days of Future Past in Theaters!
2. 22 Jumpstreet
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill pair up once again to bring us the second must see movie of the summer, 22 Jumpstreet. From the trailer, it seems to be just as filled with comedy as its first movie, with the return of our favorite undercover cops, Schmidt and Jenko. The movie also includes the return of 21 Jump street’s dealers, Mr. Walters and Eric. In this sequel however, they will be going to college to locate the source of a new drug. The trailer is filled with laugh out loud moments, including therapy sessions, sassy college students and even a dig at Mumford and Sons fans thereby proving it to be a must watch comedy of this summer!
1. The Fault in our Stars
And finally the NUMBER 1 must see movie of this summer (If you haven’t guessed already) is The Fault in Our Stars. Based off of the wildly popular novel by John Green, The Fault in Our Stars follows the story of cancer-stricken Hazel Grace and her entrance into the dating world after she meets the ever charming, ever handsome Augustus Waters. Having read the book, I have high expectations for the movie, because the tragic plot twist and the witty lines of Augustus Waters proved to be tear-jerkers for all. If you are one to appreciate an epic love story, or if you simply want to stare at Ansel Elgort’s face for approximately two hours, then this movie must be watched. But make sure you bring a box of tissues(or two).
