What is Public Relations?

According to the PRSA, the leading Public Relations organization, PR can be defined as a “strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.”

If we break down this definition–basically you are the gatekeeper between an organization and the people that organization serves. You are helping those publics stay informed about what the organization is doing and how it benefits them. This job is a very important job and definitely should not be taken lightly.

There are many different areas of work for a Public Relations specialist. You could be a part of a Public Relations firm that helps many different companies, you could be hired specifically for one company, or you could be hired temporarily to fix a problem. Public Relations is very diverse.

What skills do you gain from being a Public Relations Major?

You gain a wide variety of skills being a Public Relations major–but the majority of those skills are writing- and communication-related. As a Public Relations expert you will be writing many press releases for your company. These press releases will have to be well edited and include a lot of information. Press releases should encourage people to interview your company, but many times news reporters will copy parts of your press releases instead. Since this fact happens, press releases have to be clear; concise; and correct. Public Relations experts also talk to a lot of people. Whether you are having conversations with your company’s public or having a large press conference to many different people from the press, you will have to be great at speaking as well.

What kind of jobs can you get with a degree in Public Relations?

  • Government Relations
  • Reporting
  • Media Relations

This is a small compilation of things you can do with your Public Relations degree, but the list can literally go on forever. Why? Anything that deals with the public needs someone who is great at PR! It doesn’t matter if you are working with a sports team, an actor, or a small business. People who deal with people need people who can deal with those people. You are that person.

There are many places that offer Public Relations degrees. Most schools which offer a public relations program are schools that you can go to for a great degree.
